Multiple Names on a one strand Mother's Bracelet

Once in a while I am asked whether I can put two names on a one strand mother's bracelet. Yes, you can have two names on a strand. My only concern with this is that most of the "eye-catching" part of the bracelet will be replaced with letters. With the Silver/Birthstone Bracelet you may only have one birthstone on each side of the two names depending on how long the names are and the size of the bracelet. With the Semi-Precious Stone Bracelet there will be limited colors of stones and Bali beads on each end.

On the other hand, there are two great reasons to purchase a mother's bracelet with double names on a strand. For one, some people do not like the multiple strand look and just want a regular one strand bracelet. Another good reason is that some moms have more than four children. I do not make a bracelet that has more than four strands. So, with a double name strand she could easily have up to eight children's names on four strands!

Letter block sizes for Name Bracelets

I want to call attention to letter block sizes. I see many "competitor" companies increasingly using smaller letter block sizes for their mother bracelets or name bracelets. There are basically two sizes of sterling silver letter blocks: 5.6mm and 4.5mm. Many times these companies are making these customized bracelets using the smaller 4.5mm letter blocks and it's hard to see the difference in pictures on the internet. The 4.5mm letter blocks are fine to use if making a smaller child's bracelet. But when you're using these letters for adult name bracelets, it just doesn't look proportional to the other larger elements used in the bracelet and the larger hands, wrists, etc. I always use 5.6mm letter blocks for adult name bracelets and the smaller for the children. So, be careful to check out the sizes when looking into customized name bracelets. And one more thing...the price of a 4.5mm letter block name bracelet should be less expensive than the larger letter block name bracelet. It would be a shame if you ordered a name bracelet with smaller letter blocks and paid the same price as the larger letters!

"Red Hat Society" Bracelets

First of all, I would like to thank Danielle from the east coast, a fellow Ryze member, for all her help on getting my blog going. Thank you, Danielle!

I have been hearing more and more about the "Red Hat Society". From what I understand, they are a group of women, young and old, who get together for tea and other things wearing their bright red hats and purple dresses. They believe that "silliness is the comedy relief of life" and are not ashamed to show it!

Tarnished letters

While at the Raspberry Craft Festival a few weeks ago, I had a lady ask me about a bracelet she had with sterling silver letter blocks. She said that the name on her bracelet looked terrible since she had accidentally wore her mother bracelet in the swimming pool without remembering to first take it off. I gladly gave her a DRY jewelry wipe that you can purchase from about any store. You see, sterling silver beads are like sterling silverware. It may get a little dirty after a while or after being exposed to water, but should clean up nicely with the dry jewelry cloths. What's new in the craft world for 2005?

I've been researching some of the new crafts we will all see at craft fairs all around the U.S. this year. It wasn't surprisng to me that many of last years favorites are still around this year.

Of course some of the favorites that are back from last year are handmade afghans, customized bracelets and beaded jewelry, and wooden items(you've all seen all the wooden crafts at craft shows), and handmade purses.

A few weeks ago I was at my first craft show for this year and saw some interesting rocks that were imbedded with a special plant that needs little care. It was really an interesting idea. The large rocks were various shapes and sizes, but would all look beautiful on a mantel or table. Also new, was large flat rocks that had a wick coming up from the middle of it. These wicks led to a small container of kerosene underneath the flat rock so it could not be seen. Once the wick was lit, you had a beautiful flame coming out of the rock and would look great around your landscaping at night while you were outside w/ guests, etc.

One word of advice: Be aware of what you are buying at craft shows, no matter what the craft is. Because of my expertise in jewelry making and designing, I paid particular attention to the jewelry booths. Nearly every booth had very low prices on their jewelry, in which at that case I decided to investigate why because I know the going rate for "good, quality jewelry". I discovered that these booths were not using sterling silver, but plated beads. Also, glass beads (the kind you see at your regular craft stores or department stores)were being used in the bracelets and necklaces, NOT crystals. Crystals will maintain their shine and luster, glass won't. Crystals are also heavier than glass and just not in the same class as glass beads.

So, just be aware and ask the vendor many questions before your next craft show purchase. You deserve to know what your product is made of and how to take care of it!

Handmade or not?

I was just discussing with someone the other day about items, any items, that are handmade. My friend was telling me that people for some reason love the idea of something being "handmade". I was thinking about her comment later on. Do people really prefer handmade? Why, if so? Is it because care and time has been put into one particular product at a time? Is it because handmade makes it "unique"?

It never really occured to me before, but handmade is better because of both these reasons and possibly more. I know with each of the mother's bracelets or name bracelets that I make, I inspect every single bead that is placed on the wire. I make sure everything is just right. If it's a two strand bracelet, I make sure the beads on each row line up. Care and love of the work is put into each bracelet. And..uniqueness is an important quality for each bracelet I make. Anyone can go to the nearest mall and buy 5 of the exact same bracelet. But, when something is handmade with different children's names, different birthstones, different sizes, different bali beads, and so forth, that makes it special! Just as the children's names on the bracelet are special! I specifically try to make every single bracelet I make a little different whether it's adding one extra bead, or placing a bali bead in a different spot. I want each mother to have a "unique" and "special" bracelet that only she will have. And THAT is what makes handmade better!

Spring is coming! Maybe not as soon as I want, but I received my first craft show notification
for this year this week. With that, I am trying to think of new and exciting products that
I can sell at craft shows this year. I own my own jewelry business and always want to know what people want!

I have some beautiful Swarovski crystal red, white, and blue bracelets made w/ the
"remembrance symbol" charm already made for 4th of July weekend.

Does anyone have a great idea for bracelets that I could make for this year while I
am brainstorming?
